A WhatsApp audio begins, and with it, a downward spiral unfolds. The voice of a woman sinking into a health anxiety attack, quickly entangles a complex labyrinth of fears and emotions. The Spiral is a dive into a lonely ride, an hypnotic escalation towards childhood, family, and the loneliness of “home”. Does home really feel like home?
María Silvia Esteve is an argentine film director, born in Guatemala, who currently lives in Paris, France. Her debut documentary film "Silvia" had its World Premiere at IDFA, at the First Appearance Competition, received the "Artistic Vision" Award at Docaviv, and won at Habana Film Festival, DocLisboa, amongst others.Selected for The Biennale of Young Art Buenos Aires, the director participated in IDFA Summer School and IDFA Project Space, with her new project in development, "Mailin", winner of the IDFA Bertha Fund and double award winner at the Visions du Réel Industry as the project with the highest international potential. She has been a part of the Jury at film festivals such as SEMINCI and FIDBA, and works as a consultant for audiovisual film projects.As the only Argentine film in Cannes Film Festival 2022, her short film "The Spiral" had its World Premiere at the 54th Quinzaine des Réalisateurs. Silvia has also begun writing her first fiction feature “Fauces”, winner of the Focus COPRO’ 2022 - Festival de Cannes. The film is based on her short film "Criatura", winner of the Pardino d’oro for the Best Auteur Short film at the Locarno Film Festival. Selected into Locarno's Spring Academy with Michelangelo Frammartino, she wrote and filmed "Buio", which will premiere in the Locarno Film Festival in August.
